About underwear
Modal vs Cotton Underwear
In short
Modal is not automatically better than cotton. It depends on what you want from the pair.
Modal usually feels smoother, softer, and more fluid against the skin. Cotton can feel familiar and simple, but pure cotton has common limits in underwear: after absorbing moisture, it can hold damp warmth close to the skin; it has less natural stretch than elastane blends; and repeated washing can lead to shrinkage or shape change. Because of those limits, pure cotton is not the best choice for sport, heavy sweating, or long hours of wear when the pair needs to stay flexible and comfortable.
In the Formday system, Modal is the soft daily line. Ice is the better starting point when heat and sweat matter more than softness. Sport is for more active daily movement. AURUM is for a seamless, lower-bulk profile.
The short version
| Question | Better starting point |
|---|---|
| I want a softer, smoother daily pair | Modal |
| I like a familiar, structured fabric feel | Cotton may still make sense |
| My cotton pairs feel damp and warm after sweating | Modal or Ice, depending on heat level |
| My cotton pairs lose shape or shrink after washing | Modal blend with elastane |
| I sit for long hours and want softness first | Modal |
| I sweat easily or run hot | Compare Ice before choosing |
| I want movement stability | Compare Sport before choosing |
| I want a lower-bulk seamless profile | Compare AURUM before choosing |
Where modal tends to feel better
Modal's main advantage is handfeel. It can feel smoother and less stiff than many everyday cotton fabrics, which is why many users consider it when upgrading from basic cotton boxer briefs.
The other difference is recovery. Formday Modal styles are built as modal blends with elastane, not pure modal cloth. Underwear needs to stretch, return, and keep a close fit through sitting, walking, and washing.
Where cotton can still make sense, and where it can fail
Cotton still has a place. Some users like cotton because it feels familiar, simple, and more structured.
The problem starts after moisture. Cotton absorbs sweat well, but once it is wet, it can hold that moisture close to the body. In underwear, that can turn into a damp, warm feeling against the skin, especially during long sitting, commuting, warm weather, or a day with more walking than expected.
Pure cotton also has less natural stretch than underwear blends with elastane. That can make the pair feel less flexible during movement, and it can make the fit depend heavily on the cut. After repeated washing, cotton can also shrink, twist, or lose its original shape if the fabric and construction are not stable.
That does not make cotton bad. It means cotton is not always the best answer for sport, heavy sweating, or long hours of wear. In those situations, the user usually needs more stretch recovery, less damp warmth against the skin, and a fabric structure that keeps the pair comfortable for longer.
Heat and sweat: do not choose by softness alone
If you sweat easily, softness is only one part of the decision. Modal can feel smooth, but warm-weather comfort also depends on fabric weight, airflow, drying feel, fit, and how your body reacts to different blends.
This is where many pure cotton pairs disappoint: they may feel comfortable when dry, then become warm and heavy after absorbing moisture. If your complaint is not just softness but damp heat against the skin, do not choose by fabric name alone.
In the Formday system, Ice is the better starting point when heat and sweat matter more than softness. Modal is the softer daily path. Ice is the warmer-weather path.
Ride-up and chafing are not only fabric problems
Many users compare modal and cotton because they are trying to fix discomfort. Cotton's limits can make that discomfort more obvious: less stretch can make movement feel restricted, damp cotton can increase friction, and shrinkage can change the fit after washing. But ride-up and chafing are still not solved by fabric alone.

Which one should you choose?
Choose Modal if your current underwear feels stiff or rough, your cotton pairs feel damp and heavy after absorbing sweat, your pure cotton pairs shrink or lose shape after washing, or you want more stretch and recovery than pure cotton usually provides.
Cotton may still make sense if you like a familiar, structured feel and heat, dampness, shrinkage, and stretch recovery are not major issues for you.
Compare Ice if you sweat easily or your climate is warm and humid. Compare Sport if your pure cotton pairs feel restrictive, damp, or unstable during movement.

FAQ
Modal vs Cotton Underwear FAQ
Is modal more breathable than cotton?
Not automatically. Breathability and warm-weather comfort depend on fabric weight, airflow, fit, drying feel, and climate. Modal is usually chosen for smoother handfeel. If heat and sweat are the main issue, compare Formday Ice before choosing.
Is modal good for office wear?
Modal can be a strong option for office wear because it is built around softness and long daily comfort. Formday Modal is designed for office days, commuting, long sitting, and regular rotation.
Does cotton last longer than modal?
Not automatically. Durability depends on fabric, blend, construction, fit, care, and washing habits. Pure cotton can shrink, twist, or lose shape after repeated washing, especially when exposed to high heat.
Should I replace all cotton underwear with modal?
Not immediately. Start with one modal pair and compare how it feels during a real day. If softness and daily comfort are clearly better for your use case, then build a rotation.
